QUALITY REMNANT

Defined: an area characterized by a suite of plant species specific to the conditions of that habitat type.

To monitor (keep tabs on) a quality remnant, BMAP selected a monitoring program that uses a conservative species, e.g., a species sensitive to changes in disturbance outside of the natural regime, as the “yellow canary”, or indicator of change.

Gentiana puberulenta, Prairie gentian
Dry-mesic prairie with high species diversity.

Liatris cylindracea, Cylindrical blazing-star Dry prairie with high species diversity.
